Guitarist Dewey Finn is thrown out of his band New Vacancy due to his on-stage antics. Impersonating a substitute music teacher at a prep school, he goes on to teach the kids about rock ‘n’ roll. He then forms the band The School of Rock with them to try and win a local Battle of the Bands.
