One of the most illustrious drag queens, RuPaul has had humble beginnings. In the 1980s, he endeavoured as a filmmaker and musician. He also performed with his band ‘Wee Wee Pole,’ and also as a bar dancer at the ‘Celebrity Club.’ He got his first distinguishing role as an extra dancer in a video ‘Love Shack.’ RuPaul gained recognition across the globe as a drag queen with his debut single titled ‘Supermodel (You Better Work).’
He holds the feat of becoming the first drag queen to lead a major cosmetic campaign by becoming the spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics. Regarded as one of the most commercially successful drag queens, RuPaul bagged in two ‘Primetime Emmy Awards’ for ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, a reality competition series which was hosted and produced by him.
He has also been a successful recording artist with releases like ‘Champion,’ ‘American,’ ‘Foxy Lady,’ ‘Born Naked,’ ‘Glamazon’ etc. He has made appearances in a number of movies, including ‘Hurricane Bianca,’ ‘Crooklyn,’ ‘Too Wong Foo, Thanks To Eveything! Julie Newmar,’ ‘But I’m a Cheerleader,’ ‘The Brandy Bunch Movie’ etc. He has authored two books, and was seen in ‘Broad City’, a Comedy Central series and ‘Girlboss’, a Netflix original series.
