Bart Millard is a ten year old boy who lives with his mother and abusive father Arthur. One day, he finds that his mother has left his father due to his abusive behavior. He confronts his father about this, although the latter denies that she left because of his abusiveness. Years later, Bart begins dating a girl named Shannon, and also begins playing football. But things get ugly when he faces an injury and breaks his ankles, which ends his career. Therefore, he decides to pursue a career in music instead.
