Asia Argento (born Aria Maria Vittoria Rossa Argento) made her screen-debut in TV-miniseries ‘Sogni e bisogni’ (1985) when she was 9, while her film-debut was in ‘Demons 2’ (1986), and first lead role in Cristina Comencini’s ‘Zoo’ (1988).
Argento essayed ‘a survivor’ in supernatural-horror film ‘The Church’ (1989), and appeared in Italian comedy-drama ‘Red Wood Pigeon’ (1989), coming-of-age drama ‘Close Friends’ (1992). Her father, Italian filmmaker Dario Argento, cast her for the first time in his horror-film ‘Trauma’ (1993), and she played a detective in his ‘The Stendhal Syndrome’ (1996).
Argento’s portrayal of ‘paraplegic Arianna’ in comedy ‘Perdiamoci de Vista’ (1994), and ‘a waitress’ in drama-film ‘Compagna di viaggio’ (1996), won her ‘David di Donatello Best Actress Award,’ and also, ‘Grolla D’oro Award’ for the latter.
Argento’s first French film was ‘Le Reine Margot’ (1994), while her English-language debut-film was erotic-drama ‘New Rose Hotel’ (1998). In 1998, she played a seductress in ‘Viola Kisses Everybody’ and ‘B Monkey,’ and essayed ‘Christine Daae’ in her father’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’
After directing short films ‘Prospective’ and ‘A ritroso’ (both 1994), and documentary-shorts about her father and Abel Ferrara, Argento wrote and starred in her feature-film directorial-debut ‘Scarlet Diva’ (2000).
Argento played ‘Russian spy’ in box-office hit action-film ‘XXX’ (2002) earning international recognition. She portrayed a drug-addict single mother in her second directorial ‘The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things’ (2004). She played major roles in ‘Last Days,’ ‘Land of the Dead,’ (both 2005), ‘Marie Antoinette’ (2006), ‘The Last Mistress’ (2007), ‘Transylvania’ (2006), and her father’s ‘The Mother of Tears’ (2007).
In 2014, Argento directed a tragi-comedy, ‘Misunderstood,’ which was entered in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of ‘Cannes Film Festival.’
