After making a brief appearance in the American sitcom ‘On Our Own’ in 1994, she made her big-screen debut in the 1995 American buddy stoner comedy film ‘Friday’ directed by F. Gary Gray. The film received positive reviews from critics and grossed over $27.4 million on a $3.5 million budget. In 1997, she starred as ‘Cisely Batiste’ in the Kasi Lemmons-directed American Southern Gothic drama film ‘Eve's Bayou.’ The film was lauded by critics and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2018.
