Jean-Claude Van Damme, commonly known as Van Damme, is one of the most famous action icons. Born and brought up in Belgium, Van Damme learned Karate and other martial arts. In the early 80s, he moved to United States to make a career in American action films. His early roles include smaller parts in films, such as ‘Breakin’ and ‘Missing in Action,’ but he received his career breakthrough in the mid 80s with the film ‘No Retreat, No Surrender.' His leading role in the 1988 film ‘Bloodsport’ established him as the next big action hero, and he went doing some notable films, such as ‘Kickboxer,’ ‘Lionheart,’ ‘Street Fighter,’ ‘Universal Soldier,’ ‘Hard Target,’ and ‘The Expendables 2.'
Although he remained one of the highest earning and biggest Hollywood stars, he didn't ever do well with the film critics and constantly received backlash for his acting skills. His best roles have remained the mindless action flicks, where there wasn't much of the story to follow. He also tried his hand at directing with films, such as ‘The Quest’ and ‘Full Love,’ but did not get much success.
