Audra McDonald made her film debut in the 1996 English-language German comedy-drama ‘Seven Servants’ directed by Daryush Shokof. The film had its premiere at the 1996 Locarno Film Festival and received positive reviews from critics upon release. In 1998, she played the role of a wedding singer in the American romantic comedy-drama film ‘The Object of My Affection’ directed by Nicholas Hytner. The film opened to a mixed critical reception and grossed over $46.9 million on a budget of $15 million. She was next seen in films like Cradle Will Rock’ (1999), ‘It Runs in the Family’ (2003), and ‘The Best Thief in the World’ (2004). In 2007, she joined the cast of the American medical drama television series ‘Private Practice’ created by Shonda Rhimes. McDonald portrayed ‘Dr. Naomi Bennett’ in the series which earned her 3 ‘NAACP Image Award’ nominations. The show aired 6 seasons before going off-air in 2013. She continued to appear in television films and series like ‘Great Performances’ (2007), ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ (2008), and ‘Grey's Anatomy’ (2009). She next played the role of ‘Sarah’ in the 2011 American crime drama film ‘Rampart’ directed by Oren Moverman. While the film received mostly positive reviews from critics, it failed to perform at the box office.
McDonald next starred in television series and shows such as ‘Sesame Street’ (2012-2013), ‘The Good Wife’ (2013), ‘Submissions Only’ (2014), ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ (2014), ‘Doc McStuffins’ (2015), ‘Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill’ (2016), and ‘RuPaul's Drag Race’ (2018). In 2018, she grabbed the role of ‘Liz Reddick’ in the American legal drama ‘The Good Fight’ created by Robert King, Michelle King, and Phil Alden Robinson. The sixth and final season of the series will premiere in September 2022. McDonald also appeared in television series like ‘American Experience’ (2020), ‘Central Park’ (2020), ‘Vampirina’ (2020), and ‘The Bite’ (2021). She was last seen playing the role of ‘Dorothy Scott’ in the American historical drama television series ‘The Gilded Age’ in 2022.
