Ricky Gervais made his debut in the television series ‘The Jim Tavaré Show’ in 1999. The following year, he joined the cast of the satirical late-night British television comedy series ‘The 11 O'Clock Show.’ He appeared in 20 episodes of the series. He made his big-screen debut in the 2001 British sex comedy film ‘Dog Eat Dog’ directed by Moody Shoaibi. The film received a mixed response from critics. That same year, he joined the cast of the British television mockumentary sitcom ‘The Office’ where he played the role of ‘David Brent.’ The show ran for 2 years and aired its final episode in 2003. Gervais also won 2 ‘Golden Globe Awards’ for his performance in the show. In 2005, he reprised his role as ‘David Brent’ in the American version of ‘The Office’ which earned him several awards including the ‘Primetime Emmy Award’ and 5 ‘BAFTA Television Awards.’ He bagged another ‘Golden Globe Award’ for his portrayal of ‘Andy Millman’ in the British sitcom ‘Extras’ (2005-2007).Â
In 2007, he starred as ‘Ferdy the Fence’ in the romantic fantasy adventure film ‘Stardust’ directed by Matthew Vaughn. The film opened to a positive reception and was a box office success. The following year, he appeared in the American fantasy comedy film ‘Ghost Town’ where he played the role of ‘Bertram Pincus.’ The film managed to impress the critics who praised the performance of the cast. He next appeared in films like ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian’ (2009), ‘The Invention of Lying’ (2009), ‘Cemetery Junction’ (2010), ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’ (2011), ‘Escape from Planet Earth’ (2013), and ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’ (2014). In 2016, he was seen playing the role of ‘Ian Finch’ in the Canadian-American satirical comedy film ‘Special Correspondents.’ Gervais was also the writer and director of the film. ‘Special Correspondents’ was panned by critics and scored an approval rating of 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ricky Gervais was last seen in the 2021 stop motion mockumentary animated short film ‘Save Ralph’ directed by Spencer Susser. The film received wide critical acclaim upon release with critics praising the clever writing of the film. He is all set to appear in the upcoming American computer-animated comedy film ‘Blazing Samurai’ where he will voice the character ‘Ika Chu. The film is inspired by the 1974 American Western black comedy film ‘Blazing Saddles’ directed by Mel Brooks.
