After drug dealer Carlito Brigante is released early from prison thanks to an exploitation by his sleazy lawyer friend Dave Kleinfeld, he pledges to mend his ways and rekindles his romance with former girlfriend Gail. El cantante is a biographical musical film which tells the story of Hector Lavoe, Puerto Rican salsa singer, who had started the salsa movement in the 1970s and had also brought it to the US. The film is shown from the perspective of his wife Puchi, who describes Hector’s rise to fame, and how his life was ruined by drugs, alcohol and his depression.
