The Joy Luck Club is a drama film which revolves around four Chinese women, who along with their mothers, try to find answers regarding their complex relationships. The film then takes us to the past, and reveals the hidden pasts of the women and how their lives were shaped by clashes of Chinese and American cultures.

Nellie Forbush is a nurse working for the US Navy, who falls for a middle-aged French plantation owner named Emile. However, when she finds out that he is the father of two children, she decides to leave him. Heartbroken, Emile agrees to take on a dangerous military espionage mission. But in his absence, Nellie is struggling to deal with her feelings for him. When she learns about his mission, she starts to care for his children, fearing he might not return alive.
