In 1975, Amitabh Bachchan appeared in his most iconic film 'Sholay.' This Hindi-language action-adventure was directed by Ramesh Sippy and opened to wide critical acclaim and became a phenomenal box office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in India. Sholay is considered to be one of the best Indian films ever made. That same year, Bachchan also appeared in the Indian action crime drama film ‘Deewaar’ which was also a major critical and commercial success. Bachchan bagged the ‘Filmfare Award’ for his performance as ‘Anthony Gonzalves’ in the 1977 Hindi-language masala film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony,’ directed by Manmohan Desai. The film opened to rave reviews and was a massive commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1977.
In 1978, he bagged another ‘Filmfare Award’ for his portrayal of ‘Don / Vijay’ in the Hindi-language action thriller ‘Don,’ directed by Chandra Barot. The film opened to universal acclaim and made big numbers at the box office. Bachchan next starred in several films, including ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), ‘Gol Maal’ (1979), ‘Mr. Natwarlal’ (1979), ‘Dostana’ (1980), ‘Lawaaris’ (1981), ‘Silsila’ (1981), ‘Satte Pe Satta’ (1982), ‘Namak Halaal’ (1982), ‘Andha Kanoon’ (1983), ‘Coolie’ (1983), ‘Sharaabi’ (1984), and ‘Mard’ (1985). The following year, he starred in the Hindi-language superhero film ‘Toofan,’ which was a moderate commercial success.
In 1990, he starred in the Hindi-language action crime film ‘Agneepath’ directed by Mukul S. Anand. The film received mixed response from critics but failed to achieve success at the box office. Nevertheless, Bachchan’s performance as ‘Vijay Chavan’ in the film earned him a ‘National Film Award.’ The following year, he bagged the ‘Filmfare Award’ for his role as ‘Tiger / Shekhar Malhotra’ in the Hindi-language action crime film ‘Hum,’ directed by Mukul S. That same year, he bagged the ‘National Award’ for his performance as ‘Bhashkor Banerjee’ in the Hindi-language comedy-drama film ‘Piku,’ directed by Shoojit Sircar.
