Rowan Atkinson first appeared in the British one-off comedy television program ‘Canned Laughter’ in 1979. The same year, he joined the cast of the British television sketch comedy show ‘Not the Nine O'Clock News’ created by John Lloyd. The show ran for 4 seasons and aired its final episode in 1982. He made his big-screen debut in the 1983 spy film ‘Never Say Never Again’ directed by Irvin Kershner. The film was praised by critics and performed well at the box office, grossing over $160 million on a budget of $36 million. That same year, he came together with Richard Curtis to create ‘Blackadder,’ a series of four-period British sitcoms, where he also played the role of ‘Edmund Blackadder.’ The show aired 27 episodes (including specials) in a span of 4 seasons before going off-air in 1989. In 1990, he starred as ‘Mr. Bean’ in the British sitcom ‘Mr. Bean.’ Atkinson was also the co-creator of the series along with Richard Curtis. Part Deux’ (1993), ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ (1994), and ‘The Lion King’ (1994).
