Prakash Raj started his career with street performances and appeared in Kannada serials on the Doordarshan TV channel during his initial years. After a few supporting roles in a few Kannada films such as ‘Muthina Haara’ (1990), ‘Anukoolakkobba Ganda’ (1990), ‘Mallige Hoove’ (1992), and ‘Harakeya Kuri’ (1993). Prakash Raj made his breakthrough with a significant role in the Tamil musical film ‘Duet’ (1994) where he played the role of ‘Actor Sirpy.’
After appearing in films such as ‘Nishkarsha’ (1994), ‘Lockup Death’ (1994), and ‘Bombay’ (1995), Raj starred in the 1996 drama film ‘Kalki’ directed by K. Balachander. He won the ‘Tamil Nadu State Film Award’ for ‘Best Villain.’ The following year, he starred in the epic political drama film ‘Iruvar’ directed by Mani Ratnam. He played the role of ‘Tamizhselvan’ in the film for which he won the ‘National Film Award’ for ‘Best Supporting Actor.’ In 1998, Prakash raj appeared as ‘Narasimha’ in the action-drama film ‘Anthapuram.’ He won the ‘National Film Award’ for ‘Best Actor (Special Jury)’ for his role in the film.
Prakash Raj went on to star in films such as ‘Kavalai Padathe Sagodhara’ (1998), ‘Yaare Neenu Cheluve’ (1998), ‘Shanti Shanti Shanti’ (1998), and ‘Sneham Kosam’ (1999). In the year 2000, Prakash Raj starred in the Manoj Kumar-directed ‘Vaanavi’ where he bagged the ‘Tamil Nadu State Film Award’ for ‘Best Villain’ for his performance. In this year alone, Prakash Raj appeared in no less than 15 films including ‘Kshemamga Velli Labhamga Randi,’ ‘Manoharam,’ and ‘Azad.’
After starring in multiple Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films, Raj made his Bollywood debut in 2002 with the Krishna Vamsi-directed action thriller film ‘Shakti – The Power.’ While the film opened to a positive reception, it couldn’t perform well at the box office. He was next seen playing the role of ‘ACP Shrikant Naidu’ in the 2004 action film ‘Khakee.’
In the year 2009, Prakash Raj starred as ‘Gani Bhai’ in the action thriller film ‘Wanted.’ The film was praised by the critics and was a massive success at the box office, becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of 2009. After Wanted, Prakash Raj starred in several Hindi films including ‘Singham’ (2011), ‘Bbuddah... Hoga Terra Baap’ (2011), ‘Dabangg 2’ (2012), ‘Mumbai Mirror’ (2013), ‘Heropanti’ (2014), and ‘Golmaal Again’ (2017).
Prakash Raj was last seen in the 2021 action thriller film ‘Enemy’ where he played the role of ‘Paarirajan.’ He is all set to appear in the upcoming period drama action film ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’ directed by Prashanth Neel.
