Richard Dawson (born Colin Lionel Emm) initially pursued career in stand-up comedy, and in 1954, appeared on ‘The Benny Hill Showcase’ that presented new artists. Next, he featured on BBC’s ‘A to Z: D’ (1958), and music panel-show ‘Juke Box Jury’ (1959).
After hosting a radio talk-show in 1961, Dawson was seen on ‘The Jack Benny Program’ (1963) and made guest-appearance on TV-sitcom ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ (1963). Following uncredited roles in war-film ‘The Longest Day’ (1962) and sex-comedy ‘Promises! Promises!’ (1963), he played small parts in war-film ‘King Rat’ (1965), and comedy-horror film ‘Munster, Go Home!’ (1966).
Dawson was cast as ‘Corporal Peter Newkirk’ in ‘Hogan’s Heroes’ (1965-1971), a sitcom set in WWII POW-camp, which brought him recognition. He further appeared as ‘Pvt. MacDonald’ in war-film ‘The Devil’s Brigade’ (1968).
In 1970, Dawson became regular performer on the sketch-comedy program ‘Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In’ (1970-1973), and then, a regular panelist in game-show ‘Match Game-73’ (1973-1978), wherein his wit fetched popularity. This led to a spinoff game-show of his own, ‘Family Feud’ (1976-1985) which became a major hit, making him a household name. He gained the nickname ‘The Kissing Bandit’ for his habit of kissing every female contestant.
Dawson appeared in TV-comedy film ‘How to Pick-up Girls’ (1978) and in 1979-1980, he was guest host of several episodes of ‘Tonight Show.’ His role as malicious, arrogant game-show host ‘Damon Killian’ in action-film ‘The Running man’ (1987) earned praises.
Dawson again hosted the syndicated version of ‘Family Feud’ (1994-1995), after which he declared his retirement. He was host of in-all 2,334 episodes.
